چکیده

Qualifications, Discrimination, or Assimilation? An Extended Framework for Analysing Immigrant Wage Gaps In this paper, we analyze immigrant wage gaps and propose an extension of the traditional wage decomposition technique, which is a synthesis from two strains of literature on ethnic/immigrant wage differences, namely the ‘assimilation literature’ and the ‘discrimination literature’. We estimate separate wage equations for natives and a number of immigrant groups using panel data sample selection models. Based on the estimations, we find that the immigrant wage gap is caused by a lack of qualifications and incomplete assimilation, and that a large fraction of that gap would disappear if only immigrants could find employment and thus accumulate work experience. Native-Immigrant Wage Differentials in Germany

Iza/cepr 11 European Summer Symposium in Labour Economics

Hellerstein and Neumark (1999) developed a very straightforward method to detect wage discrimination using matched employer-employee data. However it may produce biased estimates whenever there is not perfect competition in the labor market or when the discriminated group is segregated into good or bad firms. The purpose of this paper is to develop a test for wage discrimination that completes ...

Contrasting Trajectories of Labor Market Assimilation between Migrant Women in Western and Southern Europe

The labor-market assimilation hypothesis predicts poorer initial labor-market outcomes among immigrants followed by convergence towards the outcomes of the native-born working-age population with time lived in the receiving country. We investigate the applicability of this hypothesis to migrant women’s labor force participation in Europe. We compare labor force participation rate (LFPR) gaps be...
